CHAPTER 7

“You ever been on the back of a bike, wild child?”

I want to jump around like a kid on Christmas morning when he asks me. His bike is parked a few feet behind him. The bright blue paint gleams in the midmorning sun, reminding me of the sky on a clear spring day. All the chrome sparkles.

Hell, yes, I want to ride on it. And the ridiculously handsome man in front of me, but I’ll start with the bike. I have to stop myself from letting a shiver run down my spine when I remember that mouth on me last night.

“No. As you can imagine, motorcycles are not an approved mode of transportation under the reign of Wallace and John.” As the joke comes out of my mouth, I want to shove it back in. It was supposed to be funny, but it makes me feel childish and stupid.

Thankfully, he just gives me a sincere smile that makes me feel light from my head to my toes.

“Well, Maggie, let’s change that.” He takes my hand and leads me to the bike. Margaret Amelia, whatever you do, do not skip or jump around.

“Unfortunately, I don’t have a second helmet, but mine should fit you.” He straddles the bike and hands me the helmet on the handlebar.

“What about you?”

“It won’t be the first time I’ve ridden without one, and you will not be getting on the back without a helmet. Gotta protect that pretty little head of yours.” He takes the helmet from my hands and quickly does the strap under my chin with a wink.

The rumble of the engine starting makes me jump a little.

“Foot on the peg, and then swing your leg over. Careful of the pipes.”

I manage to swing over with some manner of grace without tumbling off the bike or touching the pipes I can feel the heat coming from. My fingers wrap on to the belt loops on either side of his hips, and I get close enough that I feel safe but not close enough to be uncomfortable. Apparently not close enough for Jasper’s liking.

He wraps a hand around each of my thighs and pulls me forward. Next, he takes my hand off his belt and wraps it around his chest.

We’re so close a sheet of paper wouldn’t fit between us. His hands come to rest on my thighs, and I remember what the rough texture feels like on my bare skin. That, plus the vibration of the bike beneath me, is hell on my senses. My blush creeps through my body, and I’m so glad he can’t see me right now.

“Hold on tight, sweetness.”

I can’t help the squeal that comes out of my mouth as he revs the engine and we speed off.
